From σμᾰ́ω (smắō, to wipe; to cleanse) +‎ -μᾰ (-mă). Compare typologically ῥῠ́μμα (rhŭ́mma) < ῥῠ́πτω (rhŭ́ptō, to cleanse, to wash).
