Perhaps of Pre-Greek origin, given the suffix -υγγ- (-ung-) found also in ῐ̓́ῠ̈γξ (ĭ́ŭ̈nx), λᾰ́ρῠγξ (lắrŭnx) and πῑ́σῠγγος (pī́sŭngos).
