Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *peth₂- (to spread out).[1] Cognates include Albanian petë, Old English fæþm (English fathom), Latin pateō, patulus, and possibly pandō; and Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬚𐬀𐬥𐬀 (paθana).
