Etymology

Traditionally derived from a Proto-Indo-European *mewHdʰ- (“to complain, be emotional about”), and compared with Latin maereō (“to mourn”). (Can this⁽⁺⁾ etymology be sourced?) However, Beekes argues in favor of a Pre-Greek origin, based on the suffix -σος (-sos).^[1]
