Inherited from Ancient Greek ἐμβόλιον (embólion, “discharged object, such as a missile or javelin”), with aphesis of the initial ἐ and change of spelling -μβ- (-mv-) > μπ- (b-) in order to preserve the original of the initial Ancient pronunciation.[1]
