κουτσομπολεύω

Greek

Etymology

From κουτσο- (koutso-) (κουτσός (koutsós, lame, limping)) + an element μπολ- (bol-) + -εύω (-évo, suffix for verbs).

The element μπολ- (bol-) is most likely from the verb μπολιάζω (boliázo, to graft onto, inoculate), i.e. "to graft lame (speech)" > "to gossip". Alternatively, the element is from an earlier μπολεύω (bolévo, I wander around), from an unattested Hellenistic Koine Greek *ἐμπολεύω (*empoleúō, to frequent, go about, trade), from ἐν- (en-) + a contamination-driven blend of πολεύω (poleúō, to wander, turn about) and ἐμπολάω (empoláō, to get by barter).[1][2]
