Etymology
From Byzantine Greek κουτάβιον (koutábion), of uncertain further origin. Perhaps from an element *kut- of Slavic origin (compare Bulgarian ку́че (kúče, “dog”)) + a suffix -άβιον (-ávion). Likely not related to κόττᾰβος (kóttăbos, “cottabus (game)”).[1]
