Etymology

The formation is similar to κᾰνθῡ́λη (kănthū́lē), κοτῠ́λη (kotŭ́lē) and σχενδῡ́λη (skhendū́lē). Güntert suggests a cross of κόνδῠλος (kóndŭlos, “swelling”) with κορῠ́νη (korŭ́nē, “club; cudgel”) but Beekes claims this is is incorrect, on the basis that the prothetic σ- (s-) and the suffix -ῡλ- (-ūl-) lead to a Pre-Greek origin.
