According to Beekes, definitely from Pre-Greek, but compare Sanskrit गर्गर (gárgara, “whirlpool; eddy; churn; water-jar”) and Latin gurges (“whirlpool; eddy”). Compare also κορκόδρῠᾰ (korkódrŭă, “drain”) and κορχῠρέᾱ (korkhŭréā, “subterranean drain”).
