Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Italic *hēp-, an aorist stem whence also Oscan hipid. The present-stem of the Oscan verb derives from Proto-Italic *haβjō. Perhaps ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʰeh₁bʰ-.

Pronunciation

The linguist Paolo Poccetti suggests that the initial <γ> may phonemically represent /h/.
