Inherited from Byzantine Greek βρύση (brúsē),[1] from earlier, or Hellenistic Koine Greek βρύσις (brúsis, “bubbling up”),[2] formed from βρῡ́ω (brū́ō, “abound”) invoking its later sense of "burst, gush". See also βρύο (vrýo).
