Etymology

According to Beekes, from a Pre-Greek source, in view of the prefix βδ- and the presence of the geminate -λλ. If the gloss βδαλοί (bdaloí, garfish; varicose veins) mentioned by Hesychius of Alexandria is really connected to this verb, then this would strengthen the theory of a Pre-Greek origin,
