Etymology

Beekes suggests a Pre-Greek origin in view of the similarity with βότις (bótis, “kind of fish”), which would display a vowel interchange that is typical of substrate words. In addition, the same author finds the technicality of this ichthyonym a further proof for a Pre-Greek etymology.
