βάκηλος

Etymology

According to Beekes, the word is probably of Anatolian origin, perhaps originally Pre-Greek. He proceeds to compare synonymous κάβηλος (kábēlos) and κάληβος (kálēbos), both found in the lexicon of Hesychius of Alexandria.
