From Ancient Greek ἀφιερόω (aphieróō), from ἀφ- (aph-) + ἱερόω (hieróō), the latter component from ἱερός (hierós, “sacred”) + -ω (-ō); the modern "devote" sense is a semantic loan from French consacrer.
