Zillur Rahman (born 1 June 1970) is a senior Bangladeshi police officer who has served in several important positions in the Bangladesh Police, including as the chief of the Bangladesh Railway Police. He holds the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and served as Additional Inspector General (Addl. IGP) while leading the Railway Police.[1] [2]He is also known for being the first police officer in Bangladesh Police to obtain the Barrister-at-Law degree.
Early life and education
Rahman was born on 1 June 1970 in Narail District, Bangladesh. He completed his Secondary School Certificate and Higher Secondary Certificate examinations from Jhenaidah Cadet College. During two years of rigorous military training in the BMA, he obtained B.Sc. degree in military science from Bangladesh Military Academy under the University of Chittagong. Leaving from the Army, he obtained his MBA degree with 24th batch from the IBA, University of Dhaka.
Career
In January 1989, he joined the Bangladesh Army as a Cadet with the 23rd long course at the Bangladesh Military Academy. During this period, he also received the Frogman insignia, which is awarded for specialized underwater training. After completing his military service, he left the army and pursued higher education.
Later he joined the Bangladesh Police as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1995 through the 15th Bangladesh Civil Service (Police) cadre. In 2006–2007, he completed his Barrister-at-Law from Lincoln's Inn in the United Kingdom. He is regarded as the first serving police officer in Bangladesh Police to achieve this qualification since the force was established in 1947.
Throughout his career, Zillur Rahman has served in various operational and administrative roles within the Bangladesh Police. His postings include Officer-in-Charge (Immigration) at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police in Narayanganj, Director (Administration and Finance) of the Police Staff College, Superintendent of Police in Jhenaidah and Moulvibazar, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, and Commandant of the Rapid Response Force in Dhaka. He also served as the Bangladesh Police contingent commander in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Ivory Coast from 2009 to 2011.
He was appointed as the chief of the Bangladesh Railway Police as part of a government reshuffle of senior police.[3] As head of the Railway Police, he was responsible for maintaining security across railway stations, trains, and railway property throughout the country. [4]
In addition to his policing career, Zillur Rahman has worked as an adjunct faculty member at several public and private universities and training institutions in Bangladesh, including the University of Dhaka's Institute of Business Administration.
He is also an author and has written books on policing, criminal justice, and communication, including works on departmental proceedings, criminal investigation, legal terminology in the Bangladesh context, public speaking, and a collection of real-life anecdotes. Independent reviews and academic citations of these works are limited and may require further verification.
