Young Muslims (YM) is an Islamic North American grassroots youth 501(c)(3) organization.[1][2] It is the youth division of the Islamic Circle of North America.[3] YM operates a network of local youth groups known as "NeighborNets"[4] that provide religious programming and community activities for American Muslim youth. It has two parallel wings, The organization has two divisions, YM Brothers and YM Sisters,[5][6] which coordinate at the state and national levels but generally host activities independently at the local level.[7][8]

History

YM was founded in 1995. The organization works closely with the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA),[9] and collaborates with the Muslim Students' Association (MSA). They consistently hold thousands of members, with estimated tens of thousands of weekly attendees nationwide.

Organization and Structure

YM maintains a nationwide network of local chapters known as NeighborNets (literally "network of neighbors"). These are broken up into Regions: Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, West, and Texas. Each region is broken up into Subregions, which then operate local chapters underneath. Each NeighborNet is a self‑governing youth group, operating in coordination under the Subregion, typically composed of Muslim teenagers and young adults between the ages of 13 and 25, that meets weekly to foster religious education, and social bonding through events, and halaqas. As well as hosting Subregion wide events and retreats.[10] Although many NeighborNets are affiliated with local mosques, membership is open to any Muslim youth, or those seeking knowledge of Islam, and gatherings may be held at whatever venue best supports the group's development.
