Wilfrid Mbappé (born 11 October 1970) is a French former football coach and consultant.[1] He is the father of footballer Kylian Mbappé, who currently plays for Real Madrid.
Wilfrid is originally from Djébalè, an island in the Wouri estuary near Douala, Cameroon. His parents, accountants and executive assistants, moved to France when he was just one year old.[2]
Personal life
He lived with Fayza Lamari from 2016 to 2022, and the two were in a civil relationship.[3] Their two children, Kylian and Ethan, are professional footballers, as is Jirès Kembo Ekoko, whose legal guardian Wilfrid is.[4]
Football
A former regional footballer,[5] he coached AS Bondy for over 20 years,[6] where he notably trained Steeven Joseph-Monrose, Fabrice Nsakala, Sébastien Corchia, Jonathan Ikoné, William Saliba and Ateef Konaté, in addition to his sons Kylian and Ethan and Jirès Kembo Ekoko.[7]
He then devoted himself to his son Kylian's career, advising him on football matters, while his mother, Fayza Lamari, with the help of lawyers, took care of his communications, image and social projects.[8]
During the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Wilfrid was a consultant for the Togolese television channel New World Sport, alongside Emmanuel Adebayor, Basile Boli and Bonaventure Kalou.[9][10]
Statement
In an interview with L'Équipe, Wilfrid made an important and controversial point that football has only gone towards the thrill of money.[11]
The world of football today is more about money and business than about the love and excitement of the game. It is not natural for a ten-year-old to dream of getting into football just to make money, and one day a child told me that he wanted to earn Income like Kylian Mbappé. When my generation started in football, love for the ball and the pitch took priority; social and financial success came second. But today things have changed; even parents enter the field with concepts such as contracts and their child's financial future in mind from the very beginning. This new perspective shows that football, once a symbol of passion, excitement and entertainment, is now more than ever involved in the temptations of money and fame.[12] — Wilfrid Mbappé
Miscellaneous facts
In February 2023, a 48-year-old man named Mohamed A. was tried in the Versailles court. The reason was that he had impersonated Wilfrid Mbappé between December 2021 and January 2023 in order to obtain a residence permit in France. This means that in fact, this incident has nothing to do with Wilfrid Mbappé, but with someone else abusing his name and identity and trying to obtain a residence permit. The man was tried in court and went to prison for 10 months with an electronic bracelet.[13][14]
