H. G. Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius is the current Metropolitan of the Kandanad East Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.[1]
Early life and consecration
Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius was consecrated as a bishop in 1990 by His Holiness Ignatius Zakka I, the Patriarch of Antioch. This consecration was under the ecclesiastical authority of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church, which is part of the Syriac Orthodox Church in India.[2]
Ministry
Following the Supreme Court verdict in the Malankara Church dispute, the Diocese of Kandanad declared its allegiance to the constitution of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. When the diocese was reorganized into Kandanad East and West, Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius became the first Metropolitan of the Kandanad East Orthodox Diocese.[3]
Current role
He currently serves as the Metropolitan of the Kandanad East Orthodox Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. His leadership includes overseeing parishes, clergy, and educational and social institutions within the diocese.
