The People Upstairs (Spanish: Sentimental) is a 2020 Spanish comedy film written and directed by Cesc Gay, starring Javier Cámara, Griselda Siciliani, Belén Cuesta, and Alberto San Juan.[1][2]
The film was nominated for five Goya Awards and four Feroz Awards.[3][4]
It is an adaptation of Cesc Gay's stage play Els veïns de dalt / Los vecinos de arriba[5] and has been remade in several countries, including Italy, Switzerland and France.
Plot
Julio (Javier Cámara) and Ana (Griselda Siciliani) are a couple who spend most of their time arguing. One night, Ana decides to invite their upstairs neighbours, Salva (Alberto San Juan) and Laura (Belén Cuesta), for dinner, despite the fact that Julio is not their biggest fan, not least because of the noise they make while having sex. As the night goes on, various secrets about the couple come to light.

Reception
The People Upstairs received positive reviews from film critics. It holds a 100% approval rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes based on 9 reviews, with an average rating of 7.30/10.[6]
Carlos Boyero of El País assessed that the film "looks and sounds good, I think it's fun".[7]

Remakes
The film was remade in Italy as Neighbors in 2022,[12] in Swiss German as The Neighbours from Upstairs[13] in 2023, in France as Maybe More in 2024, and in South Korea as The People Upstairs in 2025.[14] In 2025, an American remake entitled The Invite was reported to have begun production.[15]
