Tapan Kumar Deka (born 25 February 1963) is an Indian bureaucrat and IPS officer who is currently serving as the 28th Director of the Intelligence Bureau of India.[1][2] Deka belongs to Himachal Pradesh cadre of the 1988 batch.[3] He was empanelled as Director general of police level in 2021.[4][5] Deka's tenure as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau started from 1 July as his predecessor Arvind Kumar's tenure ended on 30 June 2022.[6]

Deka earlier denied the post of the Director general of police of Himachal Pradesh.[7]

During his police service, Tapan Deka mostly worked with the Intelligence Bureau of India. He is a close aide of Ajit Doval. He joined the Intelligence Bureau in 1988.[8] The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet extended Deka's tenure till June 2025 as the chief of the Intelligence Bureau.[9][10] In May 2025, his tenure was further extended by one year till June 2026.[11][8] With that, Tapan Deka became longest serving IB chief.[12]

Early life and education

Deka was born on 25 February 1963, in Sarthebari, Assam.[2] He holds a master's degree in physics from Delhi University.[13] He was a AASU leader and selected for Indian Police Service (IPS) in his first attempt.[14]

Career

Tapan Deka was appointed as the counter-terrorism operations chief in Kashmir.[15][16] Tapan Deka has formally served as Deputy Director, Joint Director, and Additional Director, Special Director at Intelligence Bureau.

During Citizenship Amendment Act protests in Assam, Tapan Deka was deputed as per the advice of Home Minister of India Amit Shah.[17][18]

He was also the head of investigation of the 2008 Assam bombings case.[19] He also handled the investigation of Pathankot air base attack and Pulwama attack, and was the brain behind the arrest of Yasin Bhatkal, founder of Indian Mujahideen, from Nepal.[20] Deka is believed to be the key official of the surgical strike in Balakot, Pakistan.[21]
