Tan Mujiang (Chinese: 譚木匠), also known as Carpenter Tan Holdings Limited (SEHK837), is a Chinese manufacturer and retailer of wooden combs and accessories.[1][2] The company was founded in 1993 by Tan Chuanhua in Chongqing, China.[1] As of 2009, Tan Mujiang was the only publicly listed company in the wooden comb industry.[3]

History

Tan Chuanhua, who lost his right hand at age 18, became a street vendor selling combs in Chongqing.[1] The company was incorporated in the Cayman Islands on June 20, 2006, and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in December 2009.[4][1] According to the company, it has obtained more than 80 patents since December 2013.[5][6] The company began opening stores outside mainland China beginning in 2019, starting with New York City on October 19, 2019.[7]

Operations

The company manufactures wooden combs, horn combs, wooden mirrors, and hair accessories.[5][7] It also produces gua sha tools, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine and wellness practices.[8][9] The company's manufacturing processes are described as involving manual work.[5]

Tan Mujiang operates more than 1,200 retail locations in mainland China.[3][7] The company has eight stores in locations outside mainland China, including in New York City, Toronto, Tokyo, Germany, and Singapore.[10][11][12][13] The New York store opened on October 19, 2019, the Toronto location opened on March 8, 2019, and the Tokyo store opened in 2019.[11][12] Products are sold at varying price points.[5][14] The company distributes its products through direct retail and online platforms, including Taobao.[15][16]

According to reports, the company employs workers with disabilities.[17]

For the six months ending June 30, 2025, the company reported revenue of RMB 288 million, representing a 9.4 percent increase compared with the same period in 2024.[18]

Profit attributable to owners during the same period was RMB 109 million, a year-on-year increase of 13.2 percent.[18]
