Takestan County (Persian: شهرستان تاکستان)[a] is in Qazvin province, Iran. Its capital is the city of Takestan.[6]
Demographics
Language and ethnicity
The primary language spoken in Takestan is South Azerbaijani Turkish, which belongs to the Oghuz branch of the Turkic language family. The majority of the city’s population consists of Azerbaijani Turks of Iran, whose ancestral roots trace back to the historical Azerbaijani regions of East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan, Zanjan, and Qazvin. The Azerbaijani dialect spoken in Takestan is closely related to those of Qazvin, Zanjan, and Tabriz, forming part of the southern continuum of the Azerbaijani Turkic language. This linguistic and cultural connection places Takestan within the southern sphere of the Azerbaijani Turkic ethnic domain in Iran. The people of Takestan have preserved their Turkish language, folklore, and customs, playing an important role in maintaining the Azerbaijani Turkic identity within the broader Qazvin region.[7][8][9][10]
Population
At the time of the 2006 National Census, the county's population was 171,520 in 42,969 households.[11] The following census in 2011 counted 172,949 people in 50,247 households.[12] The 2016 census measured the population of the county as 172,636 in 52,917 households.[5]
