"TYG" (an acronym for "Test Your Gangsta") is a song by American rapper and songwriter Megan Thee Stallion featuring Canadian metal band Spiritbox, released on October 25, 2024, on the deluxe edition of her third studio album, Megan: Act II.[1] It is the artists' second collaboration, following Spiritbox's remix of Megan's 2023 single "Cobra".[2] Critics describe the song as rap metal,[2] trap metal,[3] and metalcore,[4] highlighting the contrast between Megan's rapped verses and Courtney LaPlante's screamed vocals.[5] The song peaked at number 37 on the Billboard Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart.[6] It was performed live for the first time at the 2025 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, where LaPlante joined Megan on stage.[7]

Background and release

In October 2024, Spiritbox were announced as contributors to the deluxe edition of Megan: Act II.[8] The deluxe edition, released on October 25, 2024, included "TYG" alongside collaborations with Flo Milli, Twice, and RM of BTS.[1]

Composition and style

"TYG" combines rap verses with heavy metal instrumentation.[2] Revolver described it as a "rap-metal banger" with chugging, nü-metal-influenced guitars and LaPlante's screamed vocals.[2] NME called it "fierce" trap metal.[3] Alternative Press described it as "hard-hitting world-building rap-metal fusion".[9] Metal Hammer noted its "half-tempo, guitar-flecked hip hop" featuring LaPlante's vocals.[4] MXDWN highlighted the use of trap rhythms, heavy guitar riffs, and alternating clean and screamed vocals.[5]

Live performances

"TYG" debuted live on April 13, 2025, at Coachella, with LaPlante joining Megan on stage.[7] Revolver described the performance as "fiery".[10] Kerrang! called it a "huge" moment.[11]

Critical reception

Critics gave generally positive reviews. MetalSucks called it "a pretty damn good" metal-rap hybrid.[12] Blabbermouth said it "pushes boundaries".[13] Exclaim! highlighted its "genre-melding" production.[14]
