Steven Cuffie
Steven Cuffie (1949, North Carolina – 2014, Baltimore, MD) was an American photographer known for portraits of his community in 1970s Baltimore.[1]
Work
Cuffie took an interest in photography as an adolescent. After studying photography for three years at the University of Maryland, he dropped out to pursue his own career in the field.[2] Cuffie connected with a coterie of other photographers working in Baltimore, and he soon began exhibiting around the city and working on commission.[3] His photography revolved around portraiture, documenting children he encountered on the street and intimate images of women at home or in his studio.[4] For most of his life he was also employed as a photographer for the City of Baltimore, documenting public events, crime scenes, and other happenings around the city. In 1982, Cuffie had his first child and the content of his work shifted away from portraits of women, but he continued developing his photography throughout his life.[5] In 2022, New York Life Gallery held a solo show of Cuffie's work, Women, his first exhibition since the 1980s and outside Baltimore.[6]
