St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Church, also known as Thuruthiply Valiyapally, is situated at Thuruthiply, approximately three kilometers away from the Perumbavoor town, in the Kunnathunad Taluk of the Ernakulam District[1].The church is renowned for its Ettunombu Perunal, or the eight-day feast of the Virgin Mary's birth, celebrated from 1st of September to the 8th [2]. The church is also known as the 'Second Manarcad' as its annunal eight-day lent festival is celebrated very similar to the famous and globally-recognized festival at the St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Cathedral, Manarcad in Kottayam.
History
Following a dispute regarding the ordination of deacons at the St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Cathedral, Kuruppampady, the deacons of five prominent families - Thombra, Mundaykkamali Chendamkudy, Thuruthummalil, Kunjuveetilkudy and Thuruthichettalathumkara and their supporters separated from the cathedral circa 1859. As they experienced difficulties without a church, the need for a place of worship in Thuruthiply was presented to the Peshkar in Kottayam, and the permission was granted. Immediately after receiving permission, a meeting was called to discuss the construction of the church. During the meeting, it was decided to construct the church on the area surrounded by paddy fields on three sides, donated by the Arakkakudi family, where the church now stands. The church's foundation stone was laid by Mor Koorilos Yuyakim, who was a representative of the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and the Reesh Episcopa of Malankara, on October 22nd, 1860.
