Sir William Purves, 1st Baronet

Sir William Purves, 1st Baronet (c. 1623–1684) was a Scottish lawyer and politician who served as the Solicitor General for Scotland.[1]

Birth and Death

Born on October 19, 1623, in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Robert Purves and Margaret Ann Douglas. He died in December 1684 (some sources say early 1685) at the age of 61. Family: He married Marjory Fleming, daughter of Robert Fleming of Restalrig, in January 1643. They had a large family, including their son and heir, Sir Alexander Purves, 2nd Baronet.

Career

Purves was an advocate and held several offices in the Court of Session and Court of Exchequer. He was appointed Solicitor General for Scotland on November 13, 1662, an office he held for many years.

Baronetcy

He was knighted and subsequently created the 1st Baronet Purves, of Purves Hall in Berwickshire and Woodhouselee, in July 1665. The baronetcy was a Nova Scotia creation, although the patent was never formally recorded in the Great Seal Register.
