Siddiqur Rahman Sarker[a] was a retired two-star officer and former engineer-in-chief of Bangladesh Army.[1] He was the former chairman of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha and an antecedent commandant of Military Institute of Science and Technology.[2]
Early life and education
Sarker was born on 10 August 1963 in Narsingdi, East Pakistan. After finishing high school, Sarker enlisted to Bangladesh Military Academy on 22 January 1980, he was commissioned with the 9th BMA long course in corps of engineers. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering degree on civil engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and furthermore graduated from Defence Services Command and Staff College, National University of Bangladesh. Sarker also completed his higher defence management courses from Osmania University of India.[3]
Military career
Sarker commanded one engineers battalion, three auxiliary engineers company and was one of the pioneer officers of the newly Border Guard Bangladesh after the Bangladesh Rifles revolt in 2009 where he served as sector commander, Dhaka. He was promoted to brigadier general on 2011 and commanded the independent engineers brigade at Dhaka Cantonment. At army headquarters, Sarker was the director of directorate of works and projects. On January 2013, Sarker was ameliorated to major general and was appointed as commander logistics area. On June same year he tenured as the commandant of Military Institute of Science and Technology. Sarker was Engineer-in-Chief of Bangladesh Army in August 2015 till his leave per retirement on February 2019.[3]
Post Military and controversy
Sarker was appointed as chairman of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha on 4 April 2024 during Fifth Hasina ministry. His post was halted on 17 September 2024 by the Yunus ministry however, he returned to office on 22 September which he served till March 2025. On 17 April 2025 the Anti-Corruption Commission started inquiry on corruption allegations against Sarker and the high court division imposed a travel ban on him and his wife. On 19 May 2025, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit obtruded suspension on his and his wife's bank accounts and assets.[4][5]
Death
Sarker died of heart attack at one of his friend's place in Faridpur, Bangladesh on 24 October 2025.[5]
Awards
Sarkar has received two notable awards.[3]
- President Border Guard Medal for role as sector commander after the Bangladesh Rifles Mutiny.
- Sena Gourab Padak from Bangladesh Army for his service from 2011 to 2012.
