The surname is primarily found in Belarus and Ukraine, and has also spread to countries such as Russia, Israel, and the United States due to emigration. The closely related surname also exists in other languages, Polish: Szostak and Lithuanian: Šeštokas.
Origin
The surname Shostak may originate from the Proto-Slavic root *šestŭ* (“sixth”) or from the name of the silver coin Shostak,[1] which was equivalent to six groschen coins.
