Sabina Jeyasingham (born 17 November 1993), professionally known as Sabby Jey, is a New ZealandSri Lankan Tamil model and actress.[1] She appeared on The Bachelor New Zealand (2021)[2] and TVNZ 2 reality show, The Ex Best Thing (2022).[3]

In India, she featured in the Tamil-language film, Kaadhal Nagaram.[4] She has also worked on modelling campaigns in New Zealand and India.[5]

Early life and education

Jeyasingham was born in Auckland, New Zealand to Sri Lankan parents who were refugees. She holds a Bachelor of Business degree from Auckland University of Technology (AUT), and is fluent in English and Tamil.[6]

Career

Jeyasingham began working in modelling at university level across New Zealand and India. The Times of India in 2017 reported that she had acted in a commercial film by the duo J. D.–Jerry and that she had signed up for the Tamil movie Kaadhal Nagaram.[4] In January 2019, Viva (NZ Herald fashion magazine) showcased a Maybelline New York campaign, where Jeyasingham became part of an expanded range of colors project.[7]

Jeyasingham featured as a bachelorette on The Bachelor New Zealand (2021) in New Zealand television.[2] The broadcaster's cast list and local magazine reviews featured her as one of the season's contestants.[8] She featured in 2022 as one of the stars of TVNZ 2 reality dating show The Ex Best Thing.[3] Local coverage and Episode listings of the show identify Jeyasingham and her ex-partner “Ku” as a featured couple.[2]

Aside from entertainment work, Jeyasingham has been associated in New Zealand media with promoting inclusivity and colourism consciousness.[1] Indian Newslink featured her as the Model of the Fortnight in 2018 for the Dark Is Beautiful campaign.[9] The same newspaper covered her role as brand ambassador in 2018.[8]

Personal life

Jeyasingham spoke about getting cosmetic surgery in a 1News interview on youth cosmetic-surgery trends in New Zealand.[10] She has also spoken to Woman's Day/Now To Love about recovery from a car accident and about being sexually assaulted and having PTSD.[11] In 2022, she participated in a public rally in Auckland calling for compulsory consent education; her remarks at the event were covered by Re:News.[12]
