The PROGRESS Proteus Championship is a professional wrestling championship created and promoted by the British professional wrestling promotion Progress Wrestling. The title is unique in that its champion decides the stipulation of the title defence.[1]
Title History
Progress Wrestling co-founder Jim Smallman unveiled the new PROGRESS Proteus Championship.[2] He said in the announcement that the champion will be able to pick the stipulation for the championship matches, subject to approval by the promotion. The title was named after the shapechanging Greek god, Proteus, the god of "elusive sea change". It was announced on 21 July 2019 that the old Progress Atlas Championship which was unified with the Progress World Championship will be replaced. The Atlas title was later revived at Chapter 133: Stop Motion Skeleton Battle in April 2022.[3]
Inaugural Rumble match
The first Proteus Champion was decided in a Royal Rumble match featuring 30 wrestlers on 15 September 2019, at PROGRESS Chapter 95: Still Chasing. The match took place at the Alexandra Palace in London, England, and was won by Paul Robinson who became the inaugural champion.[4] The bout also featured Chakara, Charli Evans, Chief Deputy Dunne, Chris Brookes, Chris Roberts, Chuck Mambo, Connor Mills, Dani Luna, Dan Moloney, Danny Duggan, Eddie Kingston, Fraser Thomas, Gene Munny, Ilja Dragunov, Jonathan Gresham, Los Federales Santos Jr., Session Moth Martina, Mike Bailey, Millie McKenzie, Niwa, Roy Johnson, Sid Scala, Spike Trivet, Sugar Dunkerton, The OJMO, TK Cooper, Travis Banks and William Eaver.[5]
