Pèrèrè [pɛ.ʁɛ.ʁɛ] is a town, arrondissement, and commune in the Borgou Department of eastern Benin. The commune covers an area of 2017 square kilometres (1253 square miles) and as of 2013 had a population of 78,988 people.[1][2]

Geography

Pèrèrè is located in the north‑east of the Borgou Department, near the border with Nigeria. The landscape is characterised by wooded savanna, gallery forests and savanna plains, within the Sudanian climate zone (with a long rainy season followed by a dry season). The commune is bounded by Nikki to the north, by Tchaourou to the east, by N‘Dali to the west and by the Nigerian border to the south‑east. [3]

Administrative divisions

The commune is divided into six arrondissements: Gninsy, Guinagourou, Kpané, Pébié, Sontou and Pèrèrè. These subdivisions consist of numerous villages and town quarters which are listed in INSAE's village‑level data. [4]

Population

According to the RGPH‑4 (2013) census, the commune had 78,988 inhabitants. [5] The ethnic composition includes primarily the Bariba (Baatombu) and the Peul among others; languages mentioned locally include Baatɔnum and Fulfulde. [6]

History

The commune has a notable history of resistance against French colonisation, notably through the figure of Saka Yérima, a prince‑warrior who fought colonial forces around 1897. [7] The modern administrative status was structured through Benin's decentralisation reforms. [8]

Economy

The local economy is overwhelmingly agrarian. Key food crops include yams, cassava, maize, sorghum and peanuts; cash crops such as cotton appear in smaller scale. Livestock (especially cattle of the Borgou breed, goats, sheep and poultry) is important, particularly among the Peul population. [9]

Infrastructure and services

Transport

Road infrastructure includes rural tracks and departmental roads linking the commune to regional hubs; accessibility can be impeded during the rainy season. [10]

Water, sanitation & energy

Water supply relies on boreholes and wells across villages; electrification mostly in town centres, with rural electrification efforts underway. [11]

Education and health

Basic educational facilities and health posts serve the commune's population; development plans and monographs note service gaps and interventions. [12]

Governance

The commune is governed by an elected municipal council and a mayor. The current mayor (as of the 2020 municipal elections) is Abdoulaye Nouhoum Allassane. [13]

Culture and heritage

The commune is proud of its cultural identity as “Fière cité et symbole de bravoure de Saka Yérima”. Traditional festivals (such as the Gaani festival) and local crafts contribute to its cultural life. [14]
