Otto Isidor Brunstein (12 October 1886 – 2 March 1942) was an Austrian lawyer (Landes- und Gerichtsadvokat) who was active in the Duchy of Bukovina and Vienna during the late Austro-Hungarian and interwar periods.
Life and Career
Education and Legal Practice
Brunstein was born on 12 October 1886 as a member of the noble Brunstein von Brunicki family. His parents were Dr. Leo Brunstein, a State and Court lawyer, and Julia (née Nimhin).[1]
After studying law, he obtained the title of Doctor. His professional competence was indicated by successfully passing the Judge's examination (Richteramtsprüfung) at the Higher Regional Court in Lemberg with a rating of "excellent success". He practiced law in Radautz, and then in Vienna, where he moved in 1913.[1]
On 17 July 1939, following the Anschluss, he emigrated to the United Kingdom. He died in London (Hammersmith) on 2 March 1942, at the age of 55.[2]
Military Service
During World War I, Brunstein held the rank of Landsturm Lieutenant in the Volunteer Automobile Corps.[1] He was recognized with the Silver Bravery Medal Second Class (silberne Tapferkeitsmedaille zweiter Klasse). His duties included serving as a driving ordnance officer and an Auto-Referent at the Czybelka Group Command.[1]
Religious Status and Family
Brunstein was born into the Jewish faith. By 1920, and at the time of his marriage, records indicate he had converted to the Evangelical of the Augsburg Confession (Lutheran).[1]
He married Kamilla Reiss (born 4 May 1889) in Vienna on 26 November 1921. Kamilla Reiss was registered as being of the Jewish faith at the time of the marriage.[1]
