Morje v času mrka is a novel by Slovenian author Mate Dolenc. It was first published in 2000.

The story is an homage to Hemingway's novel The Old Man and the Sea. After him, a film of the same name was made in 2008, directed by Jure Pervanje.[1]

Plot

The story is an homage to Ernest Hemingway's novel The Old Man and the Sea. It follows Val Sebald, an aging intellectual who left the mainland to live as a fisherman on a small Adriatic island for 50 years. He is a well-read man who spends his time between his inner world of books and his love for the sea. Although his best years are behind him and he has not caught a fish in a long time, he is still fascinated by the underwater world. His life is shaken up by two events: the arrival of a mysterious young woman named Ivana, who comes to explore the underwater world, and a final, epic battle with a "big fish." He succeeds in catching the fish but fails to bring it to shore. The book explores a man's final struggle with himself and his limitations, rather than a simple battle between man and nature.[2][3][4]

Themes and Film Adaptation

The novel is considered by many to be Dolenc's best work, with its main themes revolving around old age, love, and death. It stands out by making significant changes to the Hemingway fable it references, including the introduction of erotic elements and a use of humor. In 2008, a film of the same name was made, directed by Jure Pervanje.[2][3][4]
