Controversies and issues

Allegations of nepotism for Sungai Petani parliamentary seat

In the 2022 general election, Johari Abdul named his son, Mohammed Taufiq Johari as his successor for the Sungai Petani seat in the Malaysian Parliament. Mohammed Taufiq, who is the Head of the Kedah Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK), informed that he had received a letter of notification from the party to contest in the seat held by his father. Johari has been defending the Sungai Petani seat since 2008 and in GE14, he who is also a member of the Kedah State Legislative Assembly (ADUN) for Gurun got 45,532 votes, beating three other candidates with a majority of 21,569. Mohammed Taufiq won the seat by defeating Robert Ling Kui Ee (PN), Shahanim Mohamad Yusoff (BN), Marzuki Yahya (GTA) and Tan Chow Kang (PRM) and got a slim majority of only 1,115 votes.[4]

Doctor title dispute

The Malaysia Corruption Watch (MCW) has called on Mohammed Taufiq to provide official documentation to substantiate his claim of holding a medical doctoral title. In response to growing public concerns, the MCW emphasized that academic titles, especially those such as "Doctor," should be validated through formal, recognized qualifications. The organisation stressed the need for transparency to prevent misleading the public regarding academic credentials, especially when individuals holding influential positions make such claims.[5]

Personal life

On 9 March 2024, he married 26-year-old Fathiya Ainul Mardhiyah Andri Nopendra of Indonesia in a wedding ceremony held at the Sungai Petani Municipal Council (MPSPK) hall which was attended by his parents, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Minister of Home Affairs Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Minister of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living Armizan Mohd Ali, President of the Dewan Negara Mutang Tagal, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain, other MPs and foreign dignitaries.[6]
