Lucio Antonio “Mochero” Vásquez Sánchez (born 25 June 1952) is a Peruvian writer, historian, and political activist.[1][2] A member of the Peruvian Aprista Party, he acted in his youth as bodyguard to Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre, an experience that allowed him to become one of the most respected party historians and biographers of the party’s founder.[3]

Born in Trujillo and raised in the northern parts of Peru, Vásquez studied sociology at the National University of Cajamarca, where he served as departamental leader. Once settled in Lima assigned to Haya de la Torre, he studied and law and political science at the Federico Villarreal National University, before embarking on a career in writing and party activism.[4]

On 12 October 2025, APRA presidential hopeful Enrique Valderrama announced Vásquez as his running mate alongside historian María Inés Valdivia in the presidential primary in order to run for the party’s presidential nomination for the 2026 Peruvian general election.[5] He was confirmed as second vice presidential nominee as Valderrama’s ticket narrowly secured the nomination at the primary election held on 30 November 2025.[6]

It is worth mentioning that "Mochero" Vásquez lived with Haya de la Torre during the last years of his life, which allows him to combine these testimonies very well. Furthermore, they are a faithful reflection of the experiences of each of the people who were fortunate enough to live close to the founder of the Apra party.

Enrique Valderrama: I am also accompanied by Lucio Antonio "Mochero" Vásquez, who represents the vindication of loyalty to Haya de la Torre, the mystique of the militant, and the fundamental presence of La Libertad—the cradle of early Aprismo—in this process of party rebirth. His commitment to the grassroots and his fidelity to his word remind us that APRA is not just a political party, but a moral, social, and patriotic cause.

Enrique Valderrama's narrow victory in the internal elections of the Aprista Party and his nomination as presidential candidate has been a severe blow to a sector within the Casa del Pueblo, especially to former Prime Minister Javier Velásquez Quesquén and journalist Carla García. The "popular and provincial ticket" was left out of the 2026 general election by less than 200 votes.
