Michelle Ye Xuan (Chinese: 葉璇; born 14 February 1980) is a Chinese actress, producer, and entrepreneur. She rose to prominence after winning the Miss Chinese International Pageant 1999 and became one of the most recognizable actresses on Hong Kong television in the early 2000s through her work with TVB. Ye later transitioned into film and mainland Chinese productions, receiving critical acclaim including the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.[1]
Life and Career
1980-1997:Early Life and Education
Ye was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. Her early childhood involved family separations due to her father’s business travel and her parents’ eventual divorce. After her parents separated, she lived with her paternal grandparents, who were retired professors, and credited them for her strong academic discipline and independent mindset.[2]
At age 10, Ye relocated with her family to the United States. She attended John Dewey High School in New York City, where she excelled academically, won awards in science competitions, and participated in extracurricular activities. She graduated as valedictorian and earned a full scholarship to Wellesley College, majoring in political science.[3]
1998–1999: Beauty Competitions and Entering HK Entertainment
In 1998, Ye participated in the Miss Greater Chinatown New York Pageant, placing second runner‑up before inheriting the title. She went on to win the Miss Chinese International Pageant 1999, which led to a management contract with TVB and her entry into the Hong Kong entertainment industry.[4]
2000–2005: Joining TVB and Media Diversification
Ye debuted on television in 2000 and gained recognition through TVB dramas including Gods of Honour, Eternal Happiness, and Golden Faith. Her breakthrough came with Triumph in the Skies (2003), in which she played flight attendant Zita Tung.[5] In 2004, she served as an on-site reporter for TVB during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.[6]
In 2005, Ye appeared in TVB dramas such as Lost in the Chamber of Love and The Royal Swordsmen.[7]
2006–2010: Authorship and Film focus
In 2006, Ye published her autobiography, Shang Shan Ruo Shui – Xuan Gong Lue (上善若水·璇攻略), reflecting on her upbringing and career.[8]
Transitioning increasingly to film, she appeared in Accident, for which she won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2010.[9] She also appeared in The Sniper, Fire of Conscience (2010), Dream Home (2010), and Overheard 2.[10]
2011-2015: Leaving TVB and Mainland China Career
Ye chose not to renew her contract with TVB and Media Asia Films, formally leaving TVB, and moved her career focus to mainland China.[11] She established her own production company, Michelle Ye Studios–Zhejiang Bohai Television Ltd., producing and starring in projects including The Ninth Widow and Athena. She also served as vice-president of the Hengdian Film Association.[12]
2016–Present: Recent Work and Activities
Ye continues to balance selective acting with producing and business ventures. In 2020, she returned to acting with the film Thorn Kiss and the TV series In the Name of Father.[13]
