Maria Caruso

Maria Angelica Caruso (born 1981) is an American dancer, choreographer, and artistic director. She is the founder of Bodiography, a Pittsburgh-based dance organization that includes a contemporary ballet company and several affiliated training programs.

Early life and education

Caruso graduated from high school at age 16. She earned a Bachelor's degree in performing arts and dance from Florida State University and a Master's degree in professional leadership with an emphasis on management of nonprofit organizations from Carlow University.[1] At age 18, she received a scholarship to spend a summer with Dance Theater of Harlem. After that experience she decided to start a dance company with fuller-figured dancers.[2]

Career

Caruso founded Bodiography Contemporary Ballet in New York City in 2000 and relocated the company to Pittsburgh in 2002.[1] in 2006, she had six full-time dancers in her company, all with four year college degrees.[2][3]

Caruso has created works for Bodiography and for various companies and academic institutions in the United States and internationally. Her solo concert Metamorphosis was presented off-Broadway in 2021,[4] followed by a limited engagement in London's West End in 2022.[5] In 2024, she premiered another solo work, Incarnation, at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.[6]

In 2010, Caruso was named director of dance at La Roche College,[1] which in 2019 became La Roche University, and later served as chair of its Performing Arts Department.[7]
