Mahisha (country)

Mahisha also known as Mahisharashtra, or Mahisarattha was a country in ancient India. It was located near the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra and also in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka's Mysore District.[1][2]

Mahisha is believed to be linked to the Mahishaka people mentioned in the Hindu scriptures the Mahabharata and Puranas. According to some historical accounts, Moggaliputta-Tissa dispatched a Bhudist mission to Mahisha during the rule of Ashoka. The area was also known as Mahisamandala or the Mahishaka country.[3]
