Lenin M. Sivam (born 1974) is a Sri Lankan-born Canadian filmmaker based in Toronto, Ontario. He is known for Tamil- and English-language independent features including 1999 (2009), A Gun & a Ring (2013), Roobha (2018) and The Protector (2022).[1][2][3]

His films often explore Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora communities, migration, gender identity and belonging, and he is regarded as a leading voice among Sri Lankan Tamil filmmakers in Canada.[2]

Early life and education

Sivam was born in Jaffna, northern Sri Lanka, and migrated to Canada in 1991, settling in Toronto.[4] His father, V. M. L. Sivam, was a playwright, director and actor.[5][6]

He studied computer science at the University of Waterloo, graduating in 2000, and worked as a software architect before turning to filmmaking.[7]

Career

Short films

Sivam began making short films in Tamil and English. His first, A Few Good People (Iniyavarkal), won the Best Short Film of the Year Award from the Independent Art Film Society in 2006.[8] He followed with Strength (Uruthy) and The Next Door (Pakkaththiveedu), both exploring challenges faced by Tamil immigrants in Toronto.[9]

These works circulated in diaspora festivals and built Sivam’s reputation within Tamil-Canadian circles before his debut feature.[4][1]

1999 (2009)

Sivam’s debut feature 1999 examines Tamil-Canadian youth in Scarborough dealing with gang violence and post-war trauma.[10] The film premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival and was named one of its Top 10 Canadian Films.[11] It later screened at ReelWorld and the Chennai International Tamil Film Festival, winning Best Film (Norway Tamil Film Festival) and the CBC Audience Choice Award (ReelWorld).[5]

A Gun & A Ring (2013)

His second feature interweaves multiple Tamil-Canadian stories on guilt, migration and secrecy. It premiered in competition at the Shanghai International Film Festival and was nominated for the Golden Goblet Award.[12]

Roobha (2018)

Roobha follows a Sri Lankan Tamil trans woman in Toronto who forms a relationship with an older Tamil man.[2][13] The film premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival and later screened at the International Film Festival of India, the London Indian Film Festival, and the Cambridge Film Festival.[2][13]

The Protector (2022)

Sivam’s fourth feature, The Protector, is a psychological thriller filmed in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and blending Canadian small-town realism with South-Asian mythology.[3][14] It premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival and later at the Blood in the Snow Festival (Toronto).[15] The Protector was later released on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and iTunes after distribution through Alarm Pictures.[16]

Upcoming projects

Sivam’s next feature, Shadows, is in development.[17]

Filmmaking style and themes

Sivam’s films depart from mainstream Tamil cinema, employing realism and location shooting to depict the moral complexities of diaspora life.[6][4] 1999 and A Gun & A Ring use ensemble storytelling to explore generational trauma; Roobha combines South-Asian melodrama and intimacy to address gender identity; The Protector extends his work into myth-inflected psychological thriller territory.[2][3]
