James Dergavel Irving (15 October 1860 – 6 June 1933) was a Canadian businessman based in Bouctouche, New Brunswick. He is associated with the early Bouctouche sawmill and related enterprises that later developed into J.D. Irving Limited, and he was the father of industrialist K. C. Irving.[1][2]

Life

Irving was born on 15 October 1860[3] to Herbert Irving and his wife, Catherine Dergavel, immigrants from Dumfries, Scotland. Irving—commonly referred to by his initials J. D.—had six siblings: two sisters and four brothers.[4]

In 1881, at the age of 21, Irving purchased a small sawmill in Bouctouche and also owned a farm, where he raised cattle and silver foxes and grew vegetables.[4]

Irving had a son and a daughter with his first wife, Minnie Hutchinson Irving. Following Minnie's death, he remarried Mary Elizabeth Irving (née Gifford), with whom he had two daughters and a son, K. C. Irving.[5]

Contemporary and later accounts describe Irving as established in the local business community, with interests that included a sawmill and a general store, as well as later milling and trading activities in the Bouctouche area.[1][2]

Irving died in Bouctouche on 6 June 1933, at the age of 72.[6]

Legacy

Irving is associated with the origins of the enterprise that became J.D. Irving, Limited, which is generally dated to 1882 and traced to the sawmill and related operations he established in Bouctouche.[2][7]

Historical accounts of the conglomerate’s subsequent growth emphasize the expansion and diversification carried out under his son, K. C. Irving, whose business activities came to include forestry and forest products, transportation, shipbuilding, energy, and media, among other sectors.[8][2]

In later decades, Irving’s grandsons—J. K., Art, and Jack—were widely described as the leading figures of the Irving family businesses.[7]
