Jake Olsen (born October 11, 1989) is an American college football coach who is currently the safeties coach for the LSU Tigers. He previously served in defensive coaching roles at Missouri, Louisiana–Monroe, Northwestern State, Nicholls State, and his alma mater, Valley City State University.
Playing career
Olsen played defensive end and outside linebacker at Valley City State from 2009 to 2012, earning four varsity letters. He served as a team captain as a senior in 2012, helping the Vikings to a 7–3 record and a 6–1 mark in the North Star Athletic Association.
Coaching career
Valley City State
Olsen began his coaching career at his alma mater in 2013, leading the defensive line and developing two all-conference selections.[1]
Nicholls State
In 2014, Olsen coached outside linebackers at Nicholls State.[2]
Louisiana–Monroe
Olsen spent 2015 and 2016 as a graduate assistant at Louisiana–Monroe, assisting with safeties and defensive line while earning a master’s degree in educational technology leadership.[1]
Northwestern State
From 2017 to 2020, he coached linebackers, safeties, and outside linebackers at Northwestern State and was special teams coordinator in 2020.[3] In 2018, he was named to the AFCA’s “35 Under 35” Coaches Leadership Institute.[1]
LSU (first stint)
In 2021, Olsen served as an analyst at LSU working with linebackers and assisted in the development of All-American Damone Clark.[4]
Missouri
Olsen coached linebackers at Missouri for two seasons (2022–23), helping guide the Tigers to an 11-win campaign in 2023 including a Cotton Bowl victory over Ohio State.[5] He developed All-SEC linebacker Ty’Ron Hopper, a finalist for the Butkus Award in 2023.[5]
LSU (safeties coach)
Olsen returned to LSU ahead of the 2024 season as safeties coach.[4] His 2024 unit featured five different starters and contributed to the Tigers’ wins over South Carolina, UCLA and South Alabama.[4]
Personal life
Olsen has worked numerous youth and college camps throughout his career, including Day of Champions camps from 2013 to 2015.[1]
