Illumio is an American cybersecurity company headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, specializing in breach containment. The company’s platform helps prevent lateral movement and strengthen cyber resilience across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

History

Illumio was founded in 2013 by Andrew Rubin and P.J. Kirner. The company's initial funding rounds attracted notable investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, General Catalyst, and Formation 8.[1] In April 2015, Illumio raised $100 million in a Series C funding round led by BlackRock and Accel Partners, bringing total funding to over $142 million at that time.[2]

In June 2017, the company secured a $125 million Series D funding round led by clients advised by J.P. Morgan Asset Management, the funding supported product development and international expansion.[3]

By June 2021, Illumio had raised a $225 million Series F funding round led by Thoma Bravo, achieving a valuation of $2.75 billion.[4] This funding was intended to expand investments in customer success, product innovation, and global partner strategies.

Products & Services

Illumio offers solutions through the Illumio Platform, which includes two primary products:

Illumio Segmentation

A Zero Trust-based segmentation solution that prevents the lateral movement of threats across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. It supports use cases in public clouds (formerly Illumio CloudSecure), data centers (formerly Illumio Core), and endpoints (formerly Illumio Endpoint). Illumio Segmentation enables organizations to visualize communication flows, enforce granular policies, and isolate high-value assets to contain breaches and ransomware attacks.

Illumio Insights

An AI-powered cloud detection and response (CDR) product that provides real-time visibility into risks, threats, and potential attack paths. It leverages an AI security graph to deliver actionable intelligence for proactive containment and rapid incident response.

Breach Containment

Illumio Segmentation limits the impact of breaches by isolating compromised workloads and preventing unauthorized lateral movement. Illumio Insights complements this by using AI-driven analytics to detect anomalies and vulnerabilities, integrating CDR capabilities for real-time threat monitoring and response. The platform’s AI Security Graph maps communication patterns and highlights potential attack paths, enabling preemptive containment and rapid remediation.

A Forrester Total Economic Impact study reported that organizations using Illumio experienced reduced breach-related costs and downtime.[5]

Customers

Illumio’s customers span sectors such as finance, technology, and hospitality.[6]
