- HTHKH was granted a licence to operate an AMPS cellular radio telephone network in 1984 and launched analogue mobile services in 1985. GSM services were introduced in 1995, and in 2004 the company became the first operator in Hong Kong to launch 3G services.
- The company introduced 4G LTE services in 2012 and activated Voice over LTE (VoLTE) in 2014. Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) was launched in 2015, followed by 4.5G services in 2016. An end-to-end NB-IoT network was completed in 2017. In 2018, HTHKH upgraded its network architecture and conducted 5G outdoor trials in the 3.5 GHz and 28 GHz bands, including Hong Kong’s first live outdoor broadcast over a 5G network. Commercial 5G services were launched in April 2020.
- The company terminated 2G services in 2021 to reallocate spectrum resources for advanced mobile technologies. In 2022, the 700 MHz spectrum band was activated to improve indoor coverage and rural connectivity. In 2023, HTHKH delivered Hong Kong’s first 5G live broadcast concert from a cruise ship at sea. In 2024, the 3.5 GHz spectrum was deployed in cross-harbour tunnels, Hong Kong International Airport, major MTR stations, and venues such as AsiaWorld-Expo, Central Harbourfront Event Space, and the Hong Kong Coliseum, with full coverage at Kai Tak Sports Park for large-scale events.
- In 2025, the company added 5.5G network hotspots at Kai Tak Sports Park, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, and the West Kowloon Cultural District. It also introduced the “World Plan,” offering data services across more than 220 countries and regions
