Hirofumi Yoshida (born 1968 in Hokkaidō, Japan) is a Japanese-born conductor based in Italy, noted for his interpretations of the Italian operatic repertoire and for his role in fostering cultural exchange between Japan and Italy.[1] He serves as music director of the Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale di Modena and Principal Guest Conductor of the Odesa National Opera and Ballet Theater.[2][3]

Career

Yoshida first gained international attention through a series of large-scale open-air opera productions in Japan, including Turandot at the UNESCO-listed Heijō Palace Site in Nara (2016), La traviata at Kumamoto Castle (2017), and Tosca at Nagoya Castle (2018).[4]

In 2018, he returned to the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago to conduct Madama Butterfly.[5] Around the same period he also conducted Tosca with the Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale di Bologna in an open-air production at Nagoya Castle.[6]

He made his debut at the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania in 2020 and continued to appear regularly in leading Italian theatres. In 2021, he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Odesa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater in Ukraine, specializing in the Italian repertoire.[7][8]

Since 2022, Yoshida has served as music director of the Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale di Modena, an orchestra closely associated with Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni.[9] In January 2023 he conducted the San Geminiano celebratory concert at the UNESCO-listed Modena Cathedral.[10]

In 2024, Yoshida expanded his international activity by conducting Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at the XXIII International Festival “Operetta in Kaunas Castle” in Lithuania, featuring Japanese soloists in a production marking the centenary of Puccini’s death.[11][12]

In 2025, the Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale di Modena undertook a tour of Japan under Yoshida’s direction. The visit included the official “Italian Week” concert at Expo 2025 Osaka, followed by engagements at Sumitomo Seimei Izumi Hall in Osaka and a municipal commemorative concert in Amami.[13]

Awards

  • 2001 – Selected as the Asian representative in the Maazel/Vilar International Conductors Competition preliminary round.[14]
  • 2009 – Named one of the “Best of 2009: Behind the Scenes” by Asia Pacific Arts.[15]
  • 2013 – Awarded the “Enrico Caruso” International Prize by the City of Nettuno, Italy.[16]
  • 2022 – Honored as a Puccini specialist and presented with a cultural distinction by the Piccolo Opera Festival and the Giacomo Casanova Castle of Spessa Foundation in Italy.[17]
  • 2023 – Received the special prize “La Secchia Rapita” from the City and Archdiocese of Modena.[18]
  • 2024 – Received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Commendation in Japan for contributions to musical culture and international cultural exchange.[19][20]
