Muhammad Hembing Wijayakusuma[1] (March 10, 1940 - August 8, 2011) is an Indonesian expert traditional medicine and acupuncture, as well as a prolific author, particularly on health topics. He hosted the program Hidup Sehat Cara Hembing (Healthy Living the Hembing Way) on television from 1994 to 2006.[2] He has written more than 70 books, mainly on health. His books have been translated into various languages.[3]

Hembing was born in a simple rented house on Jalan Serdang Gang Sado, Medan, North Sumatra on March 10, 1940. He was the sixth of eleven children born to Tjong Hong Song and L.T. Kwan. He inherited traditional medicine knowledge from his grandmother[3][4]

Biography

Family

Hembing had two wives. His first wife, Lilian Kusumawati, passed away.[5] Hembing and Lilian had a daughter named Valencia Wijaya Kesuma and two sons, Ipong Wijaya Kusuma and Mochtar Wijaya Kusuma. Ipong, now known as Ipong Hembing Putra, is the chairman of the Indonesian Chinese Islamic Association (PITI).[6] His second wife is Nurdianti binti Hasan Basri. Hembing has a son named Wilbert Hembing Putra from his second wife.[7]

Education

Hembing graduated from the Chinese Medical Institute-Chinese Pharmacology and Acupuncture, Hong Kong in 1970. He has worked as an advisor at the Chinese Medical Institute-Chinese Pharmacology and Acupuncture Hong Kong (1975), consultant advisor at The Journal of Tokyo Pain Control Institute Jakarta (1975), vice president at the World Academy Society of Acupuncture South Korea (1975), lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Islam Sumatera Utara Medan (1976), professor at Wongkwang University South Korea (1976), advisor at the Acupuncture Association of Quebec Canada (1977), advisor at the Società Italiana di Agopunctura Italy (1977), president of CD Dag Hammarskjod (1987), chairman of the Indonesian Association of Traditional Medicine and Acupuncture (HIPTRI) (1992), professor at Dongshin University, South Korea (1995), chair of the Central Leadership Council of the Indonesian lecturers Association (MPP-ADI) (1999), board of trustees of Bung Karno University (UBK) Jakarta (1999), Senate of UBK Jakarta, founder of the Acupuncture Department at the University of North Sumatra, Medan, and chairman of the Cheng Ho Foundation Semarang-Jakarta.[3][8]

Death

Hembing died due to a Heart Attack on August 8, 2011 at 01.30 WIB. , at the Medistra Hospital, Gatot Subroto, Kuningan, South Jakarta. [9][10][11][12][13]. Hembing's body was buried in Cibubur.[14]
