"Heather on the Hill" is a song by Scottish singer-songwriter Nathan Evans, released on 26 January 2024 as a single.[1] It appears on his second studio album, 1994. [2] It achieved commercial success in both the United Kingdom and in Ireland, and was certified Silver in November 2024 by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for sales in excess of 200,000 copies.[3]
Background and release
Following his viral sea-shanty success in 2021, Evans developed original folk-pop material. Heather on the Hill was released digitally and streamed worldwide, including a “Bagpipe Version.”[4] The song is the third track on the album 1994, between "Catch You When You Fall" and "Driving to Nowhere," featuring folk instrumentation including strings, banjo, and fiddle.[5] "Heather on the Hill" demonstrates how artists who achieve viral attention can translate social-media popularity into mainstream folk-pop success. The track continues to bring Scottish folk-influenced music to a global audience while solidifying Nathan Evans’s post-sea-shanty career.[6]
Reception
Critics praised its folk-pop energy and Scottish folk influence.[7] The Central Trend highlighted its cultural and romantic resonance.[8] The song peaked at number 42 on the UK Official Singles Chart, and spent a combined total of nine weeks within the top 100.[9] It was subsequently certified Silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in November 2024.[10] It achieved considerable commercial success on the UK Streaming Singles Charts, where it peaked at number twelve, as well as number eleven on the UK Singles Sales Charts.[11] In the Republic of Ireland, it peaked at number thirty and spent a combined total of six weeks within the Irish Singles Charts.[12]
