Granger (surname)

Granger is a surname of English and French origin.[1] It is an occupational name for a farm bailiff.[2] The farm bailiff oversaw the collection of rent and taxes from the barns and storehouses of the lord of the manor.[2] This officer's Anglo-Norman title was grainger, and Old French grangier, both from (Old) French grange with the suffix -er (Anglo-Norman, [Old] French) / -ier ([Old] French), grange "barn" is from unattested Vulgar Latin (Gaul Latin) *grānica, meaning "granary".[1][2][3]
