PartyDemocratic Born in Henderson, Texas, in a tarpaper shack. His father, Gerhart Hans Gossens (1904 - 1993) from Alten Essen Germany, worked for the Standard Oil Company for much of his life after the Depression hit in 1929. Gerhart senior worked in Texas, Arkansas and Ohio, following the construction of the Big Inch pipeline from the oilfields of Texas to the industrial northeast. His mother was Sophie Maria Botzem, who came from a family of butchers in Mayen Germany. The family moved repeatedly during World War II, as the pipeline progressed, and by 1945, there were 4 children - Gerry, Charlotte (Mitchell), Phil Gossens (d. 1965) and Peter Gossens. In 1948, the family moved to Beirut Lebanon, where Gerry Sr worked on the TAPline (Trans-Arabia Pipeline) until his retirement in 1964. When Gerry senior retired, he was given a lump sum - for the rest of his life, money was always an issue - and an Esso station in Virginia, which he managed until his final retirement at age 65, 1969.

Gerry Gossens (October 27, 1933 – January 18, 2024) was an American politician who served in the Vermont House of Representatives from the Addison-Rutland 2 district from 1993 to 1997 and in the Vermont Senate from the Addison district from 2001 to 2005.[1][2]
