Fantuan (Chinese: 饭团外卖; pinyin: Fàntuán Wàimài) is a Canadian food delivery platform focused on Asian cuisine based in Burnaby, British Columbia.[1] The Fantuan mobile app allows users to order food, receive deliveries, place grocery orders, access lifestyle deals, and request same-city errands. Delivery drivers, who work as independent contractors, accept orders and receive payments and tips through the app.[2]

Name and branding

The Chinese word Fantuan refers to a rice ball, which also serves as the logo of the company.[2]

History

Fantuan was founded in 2014 by Randy Wu, then an economics student at Simon Fraser University, and Yaofei Feng, who had completed a master's degree in computer science at Oregon State University and left his role as a software engineer at Amazon to join the startup.[3][2] The two founders met online through the video game Dota and shared similar experiences as international students from China. They noted that familiar Asian food options were lacking near their university campuses,[3][2] inspiring them to build a delivery service tailored to these communities.

Wu modelled Fantuan after the Chinese platform Meituan.[3] In the company's early stage, Wu and Feng personally ordered food from restaurants and delivered it to customers.[3][2]

Fantuan expanded to Toronto in September 2016,[1] marking its first major move outside British Columbia. The company entered the United States in 2019,[1] beginning in Seattle before moving into New York and California, states with large Chinese American populations.[4]

In January 2021, Fantuan released the English version of its app, allowing English speaking locals to use Fantuan's services.

Fantuan received US$40 million in Series C funding in December 2023.[3] Investors included Celtic House Asia, GrubMarket, Vision Plus, JSD Capital, and other firms and entrepreneurs involved in China's food delivery and retail technology sectors.[3]

In 2022, Fantuan entered its first overseas markets outside North America by expanding to the United Kingdom and Australia.

In January 2024, Fantuan announced that it had acquired the food delivery business of Chowbus.[1]

Services

Fantuan's services are centered on providing food delivery for Chinese and Asian cuisine, with a particular focus on serving Chinese communities in North America. The platform initially targeted new immigrants and international students,[5] who often faced challenges when using mainstream delivery apps, including unfamiliar English-language interfaces, limited support for WeChat Pay and Alipay, and restaurant rating systems that did not always reflect the quality of Chinese restaurants.[5] Drawing inspiration from China's multi-function "super-apps," Fantuan integrates several lifestyle and local-service features within one platform.[2]

Some Chinese restaurants listed on Fantuan operate as Fantuan exclusives. In an interview with 36Kr in 2019, the company stated that many Chinese restaurants unable to build large followings on mainstream platforms had chosen to partner with Fantuan, which promotes these restaurants through its online and offline marketing teams.[5]

In addition to its core focus on Chinese food delivery, Fantuan offers a wide range of on-demand services, including:

  • Food Delivery – Delivery from local and Asian-focused restaurants.
  • Self Pickup – Pre-order through the app and pick up directly in-store.
  • Grocery Delivery – Snacks, packaged foods, beauty items, and home goods.
  • In-Store Deals – Dining, entertainment, and lifestyle promotions.
  • Digital Marketing – Merchant advertising and local customer acquisition services.
  • Courier & Errands – Same-city parcel delivery and personal errand services.

Foreign expansion

Fantuan began expanding beyond its original market in British Columbia as demand for Asian-focused delivery services grew among Chinese diaspora communities in North America. The company's international expansion accelerated through the late 2010s and early 2020s, eventually reaching markets across North America, Europe, and Oceania. Fantuan operates in over 90 cities worldwide, spanning Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, making it one of the largest Asian food delivery platforms outside mainland China.

United States

Fantuan entered the United States market in 2019, starting in Seattle, later expanded into cities including New York and Los Angeles, targeting areas with high concentrations of Chinese Americans and international students.

United Kingdom

Fantuan expanded into the United Kingdom as part of its broader international growth strategy. The platform now operates in several major UK cities, including London, Manchester, and others.

Australia

Fantuan entered the Australian market as part of its overseas expansion, launching in major cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and others.

New Businesses

As part of its platform diversification strategy, Fantuan has launched in-store pay and coupon group-buying features, enabling users to make payments directly at participating merchants and access discounted offers for dining, entertainment, and lifestyle services. These additions reflect Fantuan's broader shift toward an integrated local services platform that combines online discovery with offline consumption.

In addition to transactional services, Fantuan has expanded beyond food delivery into a range of local lifestyle services. These new business lines include community-oriented features such as household services, second-hand marketplaces, housing rentals, and job listings, which allow users to access local information and services within their neighbourhoods.

Acquisition

In 2024, Fantuan announced that it had acquired the food delivery business of Chowbus, a Chicago-based company known for its point-of-sale (POS) and software-as-a-service solutions for restaurants.

Following the transaction, Chowbus continued to operate as an independent company, with its management team focusing on the development of its POS and software products. Fantuan stated that the acquisition was accompanied by a strategic partnership between the two companies, aimed at combining Fantuan's delivery network with Chowbus' restaurant technology infrastructure.
